Search “furnace repair” in Leaside and you’ll see a different top 3 than someone searching the same thing in Etobicoke, or ten minutes up the 401 in North York. Google ranks the map pack largely by proximity, so a single address can’t cover a city of over 600 square kilometres on its own. Most Toronto contractors rank well within a few blocks of their shop and disappear everywhere else.
Meanwhile the competition piles up. Franchise brands with national budgets, HomeStars and Google Local Service Ads crowd the top of the page. The jobs that used to come through word of mouth now start with a search that ends in someone else’s phone ringing.
Then there’s AI. When a homeowner asks ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overview “who’s the best roofer in Etobicoke?”, it names one to three companies. If you’re not one of them, you never hear about that job.
Ranking in Toronto means ranking neighbourhood by neighbourhood, and proving it with grid scans instead of a single city-wide number.
